'An Automicrocosm' by Johannes Punkt

Patient, the poacher waits. Elephants know all the plants in the area so the one he's got his sights on definitely knows that he's there, disguised as shrubbery. But it hasn't learnt. It just goes about life. It does not get a chance to learn: the bullet erases all learning. He has the electric saw ready and it only takes half an hour to cut the tusks off. He stashes them inside his bag and jumps into his jeep and drives across the border. The tusks are sold to a good-intentioned sculptor, who fashions them into seventeen glorious elephant statuettes.
